X4SD Swinderby
Opened in August 1940, it was home to Polish and Australian squadrons and 50 Squadron RAF and was part of 5 Group involved in the heavy bomber raids. Later in the war was home to Heavy Conversion Units. From the early 1960s RAF Swinderby was the Airmen's School of Recruit Training but was closed in 1993. Three years later the site was disposed of and is now used for industrial units, agriculture and hosts shows and antiques fairs. I hope this virtual revival will give it back some well earned dignity!

Tangmere: The South Coast of England was once the United Kingdom’s front line of air defense. One of the most famous airfields in Fighter Command was Royal Air force Tangmere, the station played a leading role in the Battle of Britain and later spearheaded the allied counter attack in northern France. Many famous names were associated with Tangmere including the legendary legless ace Sir Douglas Bader. After WW 2, it was upgraded with tarmac runways and concrete blast shelters for the next generation of jet fighters
